Homemade Baby Food

Emma is now 4 1/2 months so we have started introducing solids. Anyone who knows Issac or myself, knows that we are both HUGE health nuts. Because of this I of course made the decision to only feed Emma organic, homemade baby food rather than the nasty food that comes in the jars. Homemade baby food is truly the best thing you can do for your baby as far as solid foods are concerned for multiple reasons... Canned baby food is produced in factories which as we all know, are far from clean. The FDA actually has a rule which regulates how much rat feces can get into the baby food! On top of being feces free, homemade baby food lacks the unhealthy and detrimental preservatives that have to be put into canned baby food in order to keep it fresh. It also has zero sugar opposed to canned food in which sugary fruit juices are added to all of the fruits and even many of the vegetables. Another advantage of homemade baby food is that you get far more vegetables and fruits per serving. Canned baby food actually has very little food in it. They use the smallest amount of food possible (in order to save on cost), puree it with enormous amounts of water, and then add tapioca in order to thicken it along with harmful dyes that have been linked to ADHD and Autism. This alone should be enough of a reason to go the homemade route. Did you know that 1 out of every 110 children in America are diagnosed with Autism during some point of their childhood? If you ask me, canned baby food is just a bad idea all together. When I told people that I was going to make all of Emma's food from scratch they all told me the same thing... You will not have time and you will not care what she eats, just wait... Well I waited and I am still making all of her food from scratch. With child obesity rates soaring higher than ever before, I could not live with myself if I did not do everything in my power to ensure that my child maintains a healthy diet and has every advantage possible. Making her food from scratch is actually a rather simple process.

Since you do not season baby food, the only thing that is in it are fruits, vegetables, and water. To make homemade baby food you simply cook the fruits and vegetables, toss them into the blender, add a small amount of water, and puree. Once you have pureed the baby food into a smooth constancy you simply place it in ice cube trays, freeze, and place the frozen cubes in plastic freezer bags for later use. Since baby food keeps in the freezer for about six weeks, one afternoon of cooking an pureeing a month is all it takes to ensure your baby has the best nutrition possible. There are however a few simple rules along with several no-no's when making baby food... All food must be cleaned, peeled, and free of seeds. Spinach, corn, wheat, berries, egg whites, nuts, and anything containing citrus are typically not a good idea until your child reaches one year of age due to the fact that they are highly allergenic. This is however just a rule of thumb and many parents do decide to introduce these foods during the first year. Honey however is ALWAYS a no-no until your child reaches at least one year. Another interesting fact to remember when dealing with berries is that blueberries and cranberries are an exception. Why you may be wondering? Because though their names contain the word "Berries," they are not acutually a part of the berry family and are completly safe to give to your child once they have reached 4-6 months.
I have absolutely been enjoying every moment of feeding Emma solid foods. It makes me so happy knowing that I am providing her with the best nutrition possible. I love that little girl to pieces and firmly believe that she deserves only the best! I strongly recommend homemade baby food to anyone who has or is getting ready to start their child on solids. Not only is is much healthier than the canned varieties, but it will also save you a fortune and ensure that your baby has a great introduction to solid foods!
